After spending the morning writing about my terrible gardening year of 2016, I needed some fresh air and ventured out to the vegetable garden. I opened up one of my low tunnels covering a late August planting of “Boldor Hybrid” beets, “Bright Lights” Swiss chard and “Nelson” carrots.

Having harvested in October and again in late November I wasn’t expecting much. What I got was a gardening life affirming cache of beautiful golden beets, some lovely Swiss Chard and approximately two pounds of healthy carrots. Harvesting crops from the garden never gets old, especially in mid-January.

My wife, Catherine made a wonderful tart with the beets (recipe forthcoming) and intends to make an Italian carrot tart tomorrow. She is vying for the title “Queen of Tarts”. As for me, I’m just a happy gardener who just got a much needed shot of veggie love in mid-Winter.

All the best Greg Garnache
